You have maybe missed the point here, Cat. The concept of 'emptiness' in Zen/Ch'an is being discussed in its application within activities directly linked to Cha'an/Zen. In this case, the traditional martial arts.

We could also discuss the tea ceremony (attended a few) and even the role of the tea master -it would all be relevant. How about Takuan Soho? :

Yes.

When you look into the "mirror" and there is nothing looking back -- then you will understand emptiness.

It is very liberating experience.
